WHAT is it?
Okunoshima is a small island located in Hiroshima Prefecture. It is often called “Rabbit Island” because numerous feral rabbits are roaming around freely in the island.
WHY is it famous?
1. Habitant of many wild rabbits
The habitants of the island are only rabbits and no human are living there.
Every day, many people visit the island to be surrounded by the hundrends of cute rabbits. The type of rabbit is mainly very fluffy one called European rabbit.
2. Sad History
The island was as the place where the Japanese Imperial Army manufactured thousands of poison gas during World War II. Because of that, It was also removed from all Japanese maps. You can visit the Poison Gas museum on the island to learn more about it.

HOW to get there
Accessible from Hiroshima.
Takes a train from JR Hiroshima Station to JR Mihara Station (with Shinkansen stop) for 2h, and then takes get to JR Tadanoumi Station for about 20 mins. The ferry terminal is proximate to the JR Station. The ferry ride only takes about 12 mins to reach the island.
