WHAT is it?

In the first place, what is Tanabata?

Tanabata, also known as “Star Festival” is one of Japanese traditional celebrations baed on Chinese fairy tale. It takes place on the 7th July or exactly one month later in August (according to Chinese lunar calendar). Only on that day, two stars called Altair and Vega who are usually separated by Milky Way are able to meet up once a year. How romantic it is!! As part of the custom, we write our wishes on a piece of paper, and hang it on a bamboo tree. It is said that the wishes come true!


Around Japan, many Tanabata festivals are held in July and August, and many people write their wishes on the provided bamboo, and you can also join and enjoy seeing other people's wishes!!


WHY is it famous?

Sendai Tanabata Festival is famous due to its tradition and large scale.

1. Long history of Sendai Tanabata Festival

It is said Tanabata festival dates back over 400 years ago, to the time of legendary warlord Date Masamune, the legendary warlord. Sendai Tanabata Festival is called one of the three greatest festivals in Tohoku (North East Part of Japan) with Nebuta and Akita Kanto Festival.


2. The biggest Tanabata Festival in Japan

You will be surely surprised by over 3,000 gorgeous decorations made of bamboo or paper.

Not only local people but also more than 2 million tourists across Japan write their wishes and make the decorations more meaningful! Especially, 7 ornaments, which is composed of seven kinds of decorations are famous. Each of them has its own meaning

(1) Stripbook ... I wish for progress in learning and writing. (2) Paper clothes ... I wish for the progress of sickness or sadness. (3) Orizuru ... I wish for longevity. (4) Drawstring ... I wish for wealth and saving, prosperous business. (5) Throwing net ... I hope for good fishing. (6) Waste basket ... ... Place the scraps and paper scraps as you made decorations. I pray for cleanliness and frugality. (7) Windblow ... symbolizes Orihime's yarn.


You can also enjoy Japanese street foods and traditional performance in the park. At night, you can also see the dynamic fireworks!!
