Naoshima is an island, which is part of Kagawa Prefecture, and located in the Seto Inland Sea. The island is famous as “The island of Art” where the whole island embraces numerous art works like one island museum.
WHY is it famous?

History of Naoshima
The ambitious project got started in 1985 by Tetsuhiko Furutake, the CEO of Benesse Corporation. He had a vision to revitalize the area by turning the island into an “art island”
After that thanks to the collaboration of regional government, Benesse Corporation and famous artists, museum were constructed and more arts are created in the islands. Still some projects including "House Project", are undergoing and it is expected to become a true hub of art in nature!
Seto Inland Sea and Art
These days, Seto Inland has become famous for Artistic area as the venue of 'Setouchi Triennale' the art festival held triennially. These island have faced in the serious issue of its decreasing population for a long time, and now the festival and the concept of Seto Indland and Art are expected to be "the hope of the sea (Seto Inland Sea)" attracting more tourists from all over the world.
The art festival consists of artworks exhibited in various places centered on the islands in Setouchi, of course, including Naoshima. Many events are held by artists, theatrical companies, and orchestras, collaborating with local traditional arts and festivals.
What to see?
Ayoi Kusama’s ‘Pumpkins’
The famous contemporary artist "Ayoi Kusama",known for her iconic dots, also created her art two yellow and red"Pumpkins" here. She mentioned that "the yellow pumpkin searched for the sun's "red light" to the end of the universe and it transformed into a red pumpkin in the Naoshima sea" You would feel the collaboration and modern art and unchanged nature through her works.
Chichu Art Museum
It opened in 2004 and the entire building is also an art work designed by Tadao Ando. Not to spoil the beautiful scenery of the island the majority of the building is located underground.
Artworks by Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria are on permanent display inside.

HOW to get there
【By public transportation】
Takes Shinkansen from Tokyo to Okayama for about 3.5 hours, and then takes a ferry from Uno Port (for Miyanoura port) and a passenger boat (for Miyanoura port or Honmura port). It takes approximate 15-20 minutes.
