The Blue Pond in Hokkaido is waiting for you with picturesque scene!
WHAT is it?
The Blue Pond, which is closely located in the hot spring town of Shirogane Onsen is literally famous for its deep blue color which it owes to natural minerals dissolved in the water.
The pond is the result of works on the Biei Rivercarried out after the 1988 eruption of Mount Tokachi, to protect the town of Biei from volcanic mudflows. The colour is thought to result from the accidental presence of colloidal aluminium hydroxide in the water.
WHY it became famous?
The photo of this pond taken by Kent Shiraishi, the Japanese photographer was adopted as the background wallpaper to OSX Mountain Lion, and now known to millions of people all over the world.
WHEN to go?
From the middle of May to June, it turns to cobalt blue
In other seasons, you can enjoy emerald color
It is Lighted up in Winter from 1st of November to 31st of March
